Valencia
Antonio de Felipe was born in Valencia (Spain) in 1965. He received his training in the same city, at the Valencia School of Fine Arts. He lived and worked in Madrid for many years. The work of Antonio de Felipe is a constant source of surprises and provokes great fascination. It's a pleasure to see the evolution of his clever ideas and sense of humor. His world of images conveys very strong contrasts as the artist mixes comic book characters, classical art, horror romanticism and a commercial vein with the representation of contemporary idols. Antonio de Felipe's work evolved as his series such as Las vacas, Logotipos, Popsport among others. The Cinemaspop series portrays vain actors and actresses who have become objects of adoration. Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo are two examples of cinema icons that are represented on various wallpapers, where the artist pays tribute to the great masters: sometimes it is Picasso and his Guernica in the background, sometimes it is the intersideral figures by Miró that occupy the background, while Marilyn Monroe opens her red lips to the foreground. Playing with advertising stereotypes is one of Antonio de Felipe's favorite methods. His paraphrase of Diego Velázquez's famous painting, Las Meninas, done in 1656, is a good example. While in Velázquez's original painting Margarita, the young Spanish princess, holds a cool glass of aromatic water, Felipe's version has her holding a can of Fanta brand soft drink. Antonio de Felipe has held more than seventy individual exhibitions in Spain and abroad. He has also participated in several group exhibitions such as La Casa de Vacas in Madrid, Museu Picasso in Barcelona, Museum of the City of Valencia, Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa Foundation (BBK) and Soma Art Museum in Seoul.
