A piece of news I heard on the radio was the reason for me to paint this diptych: a minister announced measures to definitively tackle the problem of prostitution, to protect women victims of abuse, mistreatment and without any type of support from the state. I remember that she used the term “whorehouses” referring to “users.” And after a few months... absolute passivity and forgetfulness. Given the political indecision to appropriately regulate the existence of brothels, she wanted to show this reality, without moralizing, to present a “sunset” in the celestial landscape and another that remains before the indifferent eyes of society. Working in the form of a diptych, playing with monochrome and colour, helps reflect a timeless image. The use of an industrial marker (reminiscent of white wax) on a matte black background helps to “illuminate” the scene and the marked line of the drawing leads to a more heartbreaking and expressionist image. Once the drawing was finished and before introducing the colour, I paid a visit to the Paris club (brothel) on the outskirts of my city, at the entrance to Sagunto. I parked and took some photos with my cell phone (I show one of they). It is next to a hotel and a gas station. Very visible from the main road (perhaps not enough to sensitize our politicians), curiously it was already dawn and a car left with two tired and low-spirited women...the workday was over. I returned to the studio to introduce colour and play with the natural light of the sunset and the neon light of the lupanar.
