Valencia
I was near the Central Market of Valencia; in its surroundings I usually find ideas to illustrate my paintings. Curiously, on Ercilla Street, some very striking graffiti appeared on a wall. I wondered why I hadn't noticed them before. I imagined how they would be reflected in a drawing: with a clear allusion to the world of comics or illustration. I began to take photographs of the wall and it was, as a passerby passed by, that I realized that the paintings made on the wall seemed to be in dialogue with it. If I had the character walking in the center of the composition, in front of the text with the oriental typography, both the dragon with its flare and the “robot” with its laser seemed to reach him. I remembered the painting by the surrealist painter René Magritte, “Ceci n'est pas une pipe” and I thought that the character “trapped between two fires” could find himself in an ambush between the reality of the painting and the reality of the street where he walks. I decided to give it the title “this is not an ambush” clearly alluding to the painting by the French painter. Both the dragon and the robot appeared in pink and blue and the possibility of subtracting their prominence
