This work does fall squarely within the naturalist-folklorist painting, for which Agrasot had so much demand in Valencia by a nascent citizen bourgeoisie with a certain idyllic sense of the countryside. Made in the second half of the 19th century, like so many other “orchard men and women,” the character (whose model he frequently repeats, either in conversation with another farmer, or as here, alone smoking and racking a jug) looking at us smiling and uninhibited in a peaceful holiday break, as if trying to integrate the viewer into the action to share. Agrasot was always a painter very given to friendly contact with the people of the countryside, with whom he had innate empathy due to their strong and good-natured character. They allowed themselves to be painted, and he enjoyed doing it, that is why there is so much truth in his paintings about people to whom he spoke in their vernacular language, shared his customs and sat at his table as equals.
