The ecclesiastical imprint was always present in our author from his first works in the bishopric of Orihuela where he was born, grew up and his already inalienable artistic vocation emerged, even in papal Rome and his gestation as a painter who was an expert in the trade and a decided vitalist need. This tableautin (small format and easy to market) is, above all, a pictorial essay, a way of doing things that reaches full force around the circle of friends or followers of the watercolorist Fortuny, essentially Martín Rico, in the City Eterna and later in Granada; that is, sketch a pencil drawing and then superimpose color from the sample offered from the watercolor box, starting with a Naples yellow, different siennas until reaching black; even, and sometimes, without prior drawing notes. The relaxed attitude of the Eminence of him sitting on it, letting himself fall on the chair and with his legs open, gesturing to give explanations about some matter, seems not very transcendental, it results from a human verisimilitude very much to the taste of the most realistic Agrasot. His handling of the fine brush capturing details such as the cord and the cross or the Cardinal Ring, and the transition from the orange tones to their accentuation in purple, somewhat darker that facilitate shading in lateral light, can only be captured by a virtuoso, such as him, in the transience of watercolor (printing of transparent layers), on a background that leaves the beatific interlocutor as if in the air.
